Understanding the Two-Part Riot ID System

Valorant uses Riot IDs rather than traditional single-string gamertags. Every Riot ID has two distinct components separated by a hash mark (#):

  1. Game Name (3 to 16 characters): The visible text that teammates and opponents see in the buy menu, scoreboard, and kill feed.
  2. Tagline (3 to 5 alphanumeric characters): The unique identifier appended after the hash (e.g., #NA1, #0001, #VNDL).

Because taglines act as unique discriminators, duplicate Game Names are permitted across different players. Two players can both be named VANDAL on the same regional server as long as their taglines differ (VANDAL#TAP vs VANDAL#ACE).

Component Minimum Length Maximum Length Character Support Cooldown
Game Name 3 characters 16 characters Letters, numbers, select Unicode glyphs 90 days
Tagline 3 characters 5 characters Letters and numbers only 90 days

Free Name Changes: Avoiding the Paid Myth

Unlike games that charge $5 to $10 for a rename card, Riot Games allows all Valorant players to change both their Game Name and Tagline completely free of charge once every 90 days.

To update your handle:

  1. Open a browser and visit account.riotgames.com.
  2. Sign in with your Riot Games username and password.
  3. Under the Riot ID section at the top of your dashboard, click the edit icon.
  4. Type or paste your new Game Name into the primary text box.
  5. Customize your 3 to 5 character Tagline in the field next to the # mark.
  6. Click Save Changes. The update syncs across Valorant, Teamfight Tactics, and League of Legends automatically.

Agent Role Archetypes for Competitive Lobbies

High-elo Immortal and Radiant players typically structure their monikers around agent roles or clean single-word handles:

  • Duelists: Short, punchy, high-impact terms (VANDAL, 1TAP, PEEKER, DIFF).
  • Initiators: Information and tactical callouts (RECON, DART, RADAR, BREACH).
  • Controllers: Shadows, smokes, and space-denial terms (VOID, VIPER, OMEN, SMOKE).
  • Sentinels: Fortifications, setups, and site anchors (LOCKDOWN, WIRE, CIPHER, HOLD).
