Activision ID Display Rules and Limits

Call of Duty titles—including Warzone, Modern Warfare III, and CoD Mobile—use the cross-platform Activision ID system. Your account consists of your visible display name (up to 16 characters) followed by an automated seven-digit numeric discriminator (#1234567).

Setting Limit Notes
Display Name Length 2 to 16 characters Letters, numbers, and basic punctuation (_, -)
Clan Tag Length 4 to 5 characters Placed inside brackets [TAG] before your name
Token Refresh Rate 1 token every 6 months Bank capacity is capped at 2 tokens maximum
Profanity Filter Strict automated check Flags political terms, leet-speak slurs, and system codes

The 6-Month Token Rule: Plan Before You Rename

Activision is strict regarding name changes. You do not purchase rename tokens with COD Points. Instead, Activision grants one Rename Token every six calendar months.

Because you can store a maximum of two tokens at any time, a rushed decision can lock you into a bad handle for half a year. Before confirming an edit in your account settings:

  1. Verify character counts on a scratchpad.
  2. Confirm your squadmates agree on any shared clan or team prefixes.
  3. Check that your name does not trigger false positives in Activision’s automated filter.

Free Clan Tags: Customizing Without Spending Tokens

If your squad wants a unified identity, do not burn an Activision Rename Token to add team initials directly into your display name. Use the dedicated in-game Clan Tag feature instead:

  1. In the multiplayer or Warzone lobby, open the Barracks or Customize tab.
  2. Select Clan Tag.
  3. Type up to four or five characters inside the prompt (e.g., TASK, GHOST, 141).
  4. Click Apply.

Your clan tag will appear enclosed in square brackets [TASK] ahead of your name in lobbies, killcams, and leaderboards. Clan tags can be edited at any time with zero cooldowns and zero token costs.
